All About Us
The Northants Basketball Club is one of the biggest junior basketball clubs in the country. The Club was originally the competitive arm of the Northants Schools Basketball Association but in September 2007 it became a stand alone club.
The Club operates in five very different areas namely:
- Community based activities including Central Venue Leagues. Some of these CVL’s are operated by the Northants Schools Basketball Association while others are run by the senior county governing body
- A junior development programme called “Ballers” for boys and girls aged 5 to 10. This programme is directed by Karen Goodrich who supervises a team of fully qualified coaches many of them players from the older age group teams. Players in the “Ballers” programme enjoy a mixture of fun-based activities, Intra Group and Invitational tournaments. all these activities firmly based on the principles of Long Term Athlete Development.
- A development programme for boys and girls aged 10 -12 called the “Ballers Academy”.
- A comprehensive competitive programme with boys and girls teams playing in every age group
of the National League
- Supervision of a Basketball Academy based at Moulton College
The club is run by a Management Committee elected at the Annual General Meeting. Details of the Committee, the Constitution and Codes of Conduct can be found under the Management Committee section of this website. Coaching matters are supervised by a Coaching Co-ordinator and coaches attend a monthly Coaches Forum where philosophical, generic, and technical matters are discussed. Coaches are encouraged to think about their Continuous Professional Development by attending coaching clinics, conferences and camps in this country and abroad.
The club’s on-court achievements over the past few years are well documented and too lengthy to list but in the recent past the club’s junior women have won and come runners-up in the National Cup. Last season was the first season that one of the club’s teams did not reach the Final 4 Play Offs but eight teams did qualify for the end of season Play Offs. These successes have been based on excellent team work and the efforts of a number of very talented players. Many of these players have gone on to represent their country and at the moment four former players are on full scholarships in the United States of America while two are playing in Iceland.
In 2003, England Basketball awarded the club 4 Star Status in its Club Accreditation Scheme and in 2006 the club achieved Clubmark accreditation. In addition the Moulton College Centre of Basketball operated by the club in conjunction with Moulton College was granted Academy Status by England Basketball. The achievements of the Club have been recognised by the County Sports Partnership by awarding the Club Runners Up place in the 2006 Club of the Year and 2007 Development club of the Year competitions.
The Northants Basketball Club is totally inclusive and its members come from all backgrounds and ethnic groups. Two years ago this fact and the club’s involvement with the local community was recognised by Sport England with the award of Community Club Development grant to build a Basketball Centre. The Northants Basketball Centre was completed in the summer of 2007 and all the club’s activities currently operate out of the Centre.
