“Rob’s men get off to a winning start”
Cadet Men’s Premier Division North
Northants “Thunder”82 – 45Derby “Trailblazers”
The Northants Cadet Men got their season off to a winning start with a comfortable victory over Derby “Trailblazers”. Under the leadership of new coach, Rob Eddon the county boys cruised to a 37 points win with ten of the twelve man squad getting onto the scoresheet.
The “Thunder” victory” came on the back of some hard nosed defence which forced a number of turn-overs leading to easy scores. This was never more evident than in the first quarter of play when from 6-5 the county boys restricted their opponents to just one point in seven minutes. At the end of that period “Thunder” led 19-6 and they took the second period 23-13 to take a 42-19 half time lead.
Derby rallied briefly in the third quarter which “Thunder” eventually took 20-15 and despite using a number of different combinations in the final period the Northants boys outscored “Trailblazers” 20-11 to record an 82-45 win.
For “Thunder”, Merson Paul top scored with 27 points but the win was based on an excellent all-round team performance. Three other players Daniel Obasa, Ravi Parmar, and Callum Woodhouse all scored in double figures while Jospeh Da Garca making his debut for the team rebounded well and turned in a determined defensive performance.
This weekend the team will face a much tougher challenge when they entertain Manchester “Magic”.
“Disappointment for Northants “Moulton”
There was massive disappointment for the Northants “Moulton” Junior Men when their scheduled Midland Premier Division game against Walsall “Wizards” was called off when the West Midlands club folded. John Collins the Coaching Co-ordinator of the Northants Basketball Club and coach to the “Moulton” team is very unhappy about the whole structure of junior men’s basketball in the country, “We already play in a very small league with every team playing each other three times. There hasn’t been enough vetting of teams who have been allowed to come into the Premier League too easily while strong teams are allowed to stay in the Regional Conference. I think new teams should be forced to start in the Conference while successful teams should be automatically promoted to the Premier League.”
“Moulton” will hope to get their season underway this weekend when they travel to City Of Birmingham.
